CAMBRIA — What types of facilities and services would be best for a town park?

The Cambria Town Park and Recreational Area steering committee is looking for input from the residents on the types of recreational facilities and activities they would like to see.

Councilman George J. Bush, chairman of the committee, met with the members Tuesday to look at several issues that need to be addressed for the town park.

The town has already purchased 108 acres off Upper Mountain Road for the purpose of developing a town park. Tuesday’s meeting provided time for the committee to look at possible uses and view plans other towns have developed for their parks.

I’ve had people tell me they’d like to see bocce ball courts,” Bush said. “I didn’t know bocce was so popular. I’ve also had people tell me they’d like to have a play ground for little ones so they can bring their grandchildren to the park.”

Bush said he’s sent letters to state Sen. George Maziarz, R-N.T., and Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte, D-Niagara Falls, about possible funding for the park.

The committee will look at playing fields, nature trails, picnic areas, and any other item in which the residents show strong interest, Bush said.

Robert Blood, engineer for Wendel Duchscherer, brought some examples of parks the firm has developed in Western New York. Among those are Isle View Park In Tonawanda, a proposed park for the Town of Niagara and
Riverside Park in Buffalo.

“The next step would be to lay out some of these ideas we’ve gathered and come back with a rough concept for us to look at next time,” he said. “These would be ideas purely for discussion and would be subject to change.”

Committee member John W. Phillips discussed some of the limitations the wetlands areas of the park might have for development.

“It is best if we get the state and federal concerns involved early in the process,” he said. “I’ve found It is better to work with them, if they are informed about it sooner rather than later.”

Recreation committee chairman Lynne F. Rogers has developed a survey for residents to give their views on the park.
She has been distributing the survey at the baseball sign-up sessions.

“I also have them at Town Hal) for any residents who go by there,” she said. “We would really like to know what people are thinking about the park.”

The surveys also will be avail able at the remaining baseball sign up sessions in the community room on Saturday and April 7, between 9:30 am. and 1 p.m., and Thursday, between 6 and 8 p.m.

Bush said the committee is invited to walk around the proper ty sometime in late April with officials from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the Army Corps of Engineers.

The other members of the committee are Councilman Robert Blackman, Susan R. Wendt, Connie A. Berti, Jamie Dannheiser and Thomas Seefeldt.

The next meeting likely will be held in May, but no definite date has been announced.
