As our summer finally begins, we say farewell to the winter season again.  As this continuous cycle persists, the Highway Department remains busy.  The snow removal equipment has been removed and the chipper and mowers have taken their place.

Our chipping schedule remains the same as in years past, from April through June.  We DO NOT chip in July and August.  The summer months are reserved for our paving projects.  We will resume chipping Sept. 1 and chip brush throughout the fall until  the first snowfall.  Mulch that has been available to residents in the past has been temporarily put on hold.  The Highway Department will use the mulch to build up the nature trail in the Town Park. When that is complete, mulch will be available to the residents again.

The Town of Cambria is no longer mowing roadsides along State roadways.  NYS has resumed responsibility for their own roadsides and should you have a concern regarding a state road, your inquiries should be directed to them.  The Niagara County residency for the NYS DOT phone number is 438-2396.

We are continuing to complete ditching projects that have been approved by the Drainage Committee.  There is a ditching policy in effect for the Town and minor ditches and swales are not the responsibility of the Town.  For further explanation of this policy, please call the Highway Department.

As more homes are constructed in our beautiful community, I would like to remind property owners that we have a driveway culvert permit that must be signed before installing a culvert along a Town road.  The town does not have to install the pipe, but it must be approved by the Highway Superintendent and a $50.00 set up fee must be paid if a private contractor installs the pipe.  Please be aware that the Town reserves the right to remove any pipe that has not been properly installed and permit not approved.

Road projects for 2010 will be thoroughly evaluated.  With blacktop prices almost doubling in five years, we have to maintain our roads and pick priority jobs first in hopes of keeping up with preservation of our existing roads.  Many of our culvert crossings have deteriorated and must be replaced before the road can be repaired.  This is an expensive task but must be completed.

The Town Park has drainage in the baseball diamond and the backstop has been installed.  The soccer field is being built up and landscaping around the pond has begun.  We will work on completing the ball diamond and dugouts and mulching around the 100 trees that were planted in the fall.  Pavilions and walking paths are next on the projected list of things to do.

Please stop by this summer and take advantage of the park.  It’s progressing nicely and it is there for  your enjoyment.  Enjoy the summer months in our beautiful community!
